Sheriff Jeff Gahler declared the killing a murder during a press conference. When the corpse was discovered near the path, the inquiry shifted from a missing person investigation to a homicide investigation, according to the sheriff. Officials “firmly believe this is the body of Rachel Morin,” according to Gahler, but the medical examiner will make the final determination.
According to Gahler, officials do not yet know whether “it was a targeted crime.” There has been no arrest of a suspect. “We will leave no stone unturned,” he added, adding that he couldn’t declare the community was safe. “Right now, there is nobody who I would put as a possible suspect, zero,” Gahler said.

The message was accompanied to an update on the disappearance of Rachel Morin, 37, who went missing on August 5, 2023, after leaving to walk on Bel Air’s Ma and Pa Trail, according to sheriff’s authorities. From Manhattan to rural Iowa, a handful of women have been murdered while jogging in unconnected situations throughout the years.
Her boyfriend, Richard Tobin, wrote on Facebook, in response to various comments left on his Facebook comment thread, “I love Rachel , I would never do anything to her , let the family and I grieve. Yes I have a past but I also have 15 months clean and have changed as a person . Please.”
